Between 2009 and 2010, increases in Ecstasy use among high school students was apparent, with past year use among 10th graders rising from 3.7 to 4.7%.
Since 1999, between 73 and 80% of poisoning deaths mentioning methadone were unintentional (3,701 such deaths in 2005), with an additional 11 to 13% of undetermined intent, 5 to 7% as suicides, less than 1 percent as homicides, and about 1 percent were injuries other than poisoning.
All stimulants, whether prescription or illicit such as methamphetamine, work by increasing dopamine levels in the brain; dopamine is a brain chemical which has to do with pleasure, movement, and attention. This is what produces a high when abused.
