Drug Addiction Facts

  • As of February 1, 2014 Canadian pharmacists will start giving out a formulation of methadone called Methadose, covered under PharmaCare, which is the same dosage but patients will only have to ingest a 10-millilitre dose of the liquid, which is about two teaspoons, instead of 100 millilitres, just under half a cup.
  • Inpatient drug rehabilitation can help people suffering from moderate to severe drug addiction. Patients typically have a long history of drug abuse.
  • Studies indicate that adolescent marijuana use and early use of other illicit drugs make an individual more likely to continue using marijuana in their mid-30s or beyond.

Hospital Inpatient

Hospital inpatient services are available to anybody who has to be safely managed through detox services when intensely addicted to drugs and alcohol, or who requires a broader spectrum of care such as someone who has a dual diagnosis and also requires mental health services as part of their rehabilitation process. You will find both short-term and long-term hospital inpatient services available.

Outpatient

Outpatient solutions are on the low end of the spectrum of treatment services regarding intensity of care, because the individual can maintain their lifestyle in many ways without the commitment of needing to remain in a rehabilitation center while receiving rehab services. While this might appear ideal it may not provide the much needed change of surroundings than many people in rehab need to have a productive rehabilitation.

Self Payment

Self Payment is necessary when a person's insurance won't cover the entire cost of rehabilitation or will only pay for part of it. In these situations, it may appear like a disadvantage but people actually have a great deal of leverage due to the fact they can select whichever center they want without the restrictions from health insurers that so many individuals encounter. In addition, rehab facilities will often provide payment assistance for individuals whose only option is self payment to enable them to get into treatment.

Medicaid

Certain rehabilitation programs accept Medicaid in the event the individual is unable to self pay or present another form of private medical health insurance. Medicaid may only cover outpatient and short-term treatment in a limited amount of facilities, and in this case individuals may choose to explore the self pay option and come up with up any resources they are able to to pay for a more quality rehabilitation facility that will get better results, say for example a long-term residential alcohol and drug treatment facility.

Medicare

Medicare recipients can seek treatment at alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs which deliver either inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation if the center is in the network of Medicare-participating providers and with the consent of their Medicare appointed physician, who must assist in setting up the person's rehabilitation strategy. Inpatient solutions are covered through Medicare Part A, with up front costs being exactly like any other type of hospital stay, and outpatient rehabilitation being paid for through Medicare Part B.

State Financed Insurance (Other Than Medicaid)

State financed insurance other than Medicaid can be used to cover the expense of drug rehabilitation if other kinds of insurance or self payment are not a choice. If a person doesn't have any private insurance and doesn't yet know if they may be eligible for state insurance, they should talk with their Social Services office in their area to determine if they are and then fill out an application. The majority of state financed insurance will cover both outpatient and inpatient rehab, but typically only within the state which offers the insurance.

Private Health Insurance

Depending on which program you are covered by, all private medical insurance plans generally cover some sort of alcohol and drug rehab service which range from outpatient rehab to inpatient or residential alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs. Individuals could have to take part in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center which is in their network of providers and there may be other restrictions such as how long their stay in rehabilitation is covered. Individuals can pick a quality program they like and consult with a treatment counselor to find out if their insurance will take care of it.

Military Insurance (E.G., Va, Tricare)

Military insurance including VA and Tricare does cover the price of certain substance abuse rehab solutions. Detox services, outpatient and inpatient facilities along with partial hospitalization are all covered by military insurance, although military members may need pre-authorization and in that case they can liaise with their VA or Tricare representative. There can be some limitations concerning just how long a stay in inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation is allowed, and all of these questions can be answered before beginning treatment so that it's clear how long and individual can remain in the treatment facility of choice.
