Self Payment

Self Payment is required when a person's insurance isn't going to pay for the total cost of rehabilitation or will only pay for some of it. In these cases, it may seem like a drawback but people in fact have a much more leverage because they can decide on whichever program they would like without the restrictions from health insurance companies that so many people face. In addition, rehab programs will often offer payment assistance for people whose only option is self payment to help them get into rehab.

Medicaid

Some rehab centers accept Medicaid in the event the individual is unable to self pay or present another type of private health insurance. Medicaid may only pay for outpatient and short-term treatment in a limited amount of centers, and in this case individuals may choose to explore the self pay option and drum up any resources they can to fund a more quality treatment facility that will produce better results, say for example a long-term residential drug and alcohol treatment program.

State Financed Insurance (Other Than Medicaid)

State financed insurance other than Medicaid may be used to cover the expense of drug treatment if other forms of insurance or self payment are not a possibility. If a person does not have any private insurance and doesn't yet know whether they could be eligible for state insurance, they can consult their Social Services office within their area to ascertain if they are and then fill out an application. The majority of state financed insurance covers both outpatient and inpatient rehab, but typically only inside the state which provides the insurance.

Private Health Insurance

Depending on which program you are covered by, all private medical insurance plans generally cover some sort of drug treatment service which range from outpatient rehab to inpatient or residential drug treatment programs. Individuals may have to take part in an alcohol and drug treatment center that's inside their network of providers and there can be other limitations including the length of time their stay in rehabilitation is covered. Individuals can select a good facility they like and meet with a rehabilitation specialist to ascertain if their insurance will handle it.
